Black smoke reaches for the vulnerable little craft in thin, almost-living tendrils. They flow into the young man lying at the bottom of the boat, lying in a shallow well of his own blood, and he breathes them in in short, ecstatic gasps.

Pain draws him. Someone is hurt, and Kovit is on his way like a moth to a flame. He's so focused on the pain that he doesn't hear the slithering, shuffling sound of the predator until he turns the corner and nearly trips into it - and its victim. His breath shaking from the good sweet strong intoxicating allure of the injury, he has to shake his head, forcing himself to focus on the danger at hand.
He still might need urged not to just stand there.
