With mages, it's both. Your title, your generation, those are what are important to them. They don't care otherwise. Be a talented mage with no lineage to speak of, you might as well not exist to them. They think it's what makes a great mage, and it's not.
However, no matter what I do, I won't get to climb that ladder. I'll just watch everyone else pushes ahead and climbs it over me.
