FEBRUARY PLOTTING MEME

Welcome to the Return Journey's first plotting meme!

In plotting memes, we share what we're doing next, our dream storylines, and any gentle workshopping on tricky subjects or character choices — essentially a CR Meme with an optional smidge of How's My Driving.

These memes are not mandatory, but they are highly encouraged because it's a place to plan CR and communicate your character arc in a way that can get others involved with yours. They're meant to be low pressure and high yield. When in doubt, ask questions!

Every month, we offer a few different prompts or character-building questions. These are entirely optional; you can absolutely just fill in the base form if you want.

Monthly Prompts

This month we're asking questions themed around consequences.

Think about the thing that your character desires most — if they failed to fulfill that desire, what would the consequence be? Does it change how they pursue their desire? Is it entirely personal, or beyond them, impacting others?

What consequences does your character need to grow? Consequences are crucial to telling a character arc for both inmates and wardens. Without them, there can't be stakes or tension, and without stakes or tension, there's no impetus to grow. What's a kick in the teeth your character needs? What are they robbing themselves of when they try to avoid these consequences?

How do consequences affect your character externally and internally? How do they react? What kinds of consequences are intolerable or tolerable, necessary or unnecessary?

Character: Grace Gibson
Canon: OC
Status: Warden
Info: Grace is open and eager to help, but has no patience with people lying to themselves (or her). Unfortunately she emits a Weirdness Vibe that makes other people uncomfortable and paranoid, and that can really fuck with the amount of good she can actually do. She can turn invisible, phase through solid objects, and float, making her ideal for any sneaky-type, spying-type or reconnaissance-type needs!!
That said, she doesn’t have super-strength, magic powers, sciencey-genius-brain or even a particularly useful career skillset, so she’s feeling kind of useless at the moment, which is a delightfully exploitable vulnerability. She also seems to be the most naive/determinedly positive Warden, at this point just kind of out of a stubborn desire to prove all the naysayers wrong. She wants to help!! Let the ghost help!!

Plotting:
Grace has been attempting to focus on inmate care, with extraordinarily little success! In the meanwhile:

- She’s made some friends :) They all hate each other :(

- The following people are aware of some or all of her Special Ghostie Abilities (tm): William, Claire, Bucky, Lucifer, possibly Silco depending on how this log goes. Volk is only aware of the Angels Trying To Kill Me Back Home thing. Everybody else should be considered Mostly Unawares ic. Travis WISHES he knew and Grace is absolutely not telling him.

- Alex helped Grace swipe a sleeping bag from one of the ATV/Camping Gear sets and has said she Owes Him One (on top of him having this blackmailable info). This will absolutely come back to bite her in the ass at the most inopportune moment and I can’t wait.

- Lucifer scares the shit out of Grace and she’s been extremely scarce around the ship since the last port, when they had a bit of a confrontation, because apparently even beyond being Instinctively Afraid Of Him she also just doesn’t really gel with his personality very much (classic introvert vs. Extrovert shit, sorry ‘bout it). Her days have been mostly taken up by checking on her inmate (Silco, who doesn’t really require too much babysitting AS FAR AS SHE KNOWS) and guarding the storage area (i.e. reading and hiding). She has convinced herself this is For The Best. Someone please convince her otherwise sometime soon. thank

Goals:
Grace started out with a totally open attitude and was basically immediately dunked into the toilet of wariness and suspicion. After seeing just how fucked up some of the inmates actually are (Travis, Theo, Silco, to a lesser extent and for very different reasons Volk) she’s starting to second-guess herself and her ability to help anybody. She’s not a scientist, she doesn’t have any magic, and she doesn’t have a useful skillset. Essentially at this point about a month into her stay, she’s feeling like that one volunteer who just showed up and was issued a namebadge, and now nobody’s quite sure what to do with her. Once again, she’s on the outside looking in. Also she’s shit-scared of Lucifer (it’s not his fault he’s been very nice!! She just sucks!!!).

All this adds up to Grace basically Turtling herself away from people for the most part, which is NOT GOOD— reverting to a withdrawal from contact is gonna be a big setback for her ultimate goal path, which is “Learning to stand up for herself and be responsible for her own choices as well as other people’s lives”. I’d like to get her back on track with some more plot things, so if your character has plot ideas they need more Wardens to participate in, please let me know!! I’m up for just about everything.
Also I wish to put her in Mortal Peril. Please Menace This Ghost. Thank You In Advance.

I'd love for these two to meet, honestly.

YEAH besides exchanging one or two words with him on her initial network post and helping in the search for him when he Disappeared they haven't had much contact. Maybe he can be her inmate soon and she can force her own version of Personal Attention on him????

also yeah she would absolutely be torn about whether or not Lucifer sucks real bad when all he seems to be doing is Legit Therapy, which, let us be clear, Theo Definitely Needs

That could work, I hope she's ready for some temper tantrum time. I also put in for my player plot so we'll see how that shakes out too.

Oh it's exactly what he needs which is why he hates it so much. The fact that it's being done with the goddamn Devil is making it 100x worse to him too!

hahaha christ, we really do need to shove these two into a proverbial Get Along T-shirt somehow, some way, if only because if she gave him half a chance Lucifer would 5000% be That Friend who encourages her to come out of her shell and OBVIOUSLY YES YOU CAN INDEED HELP YOU JUST HAVE TO FIND WAYS TO DO IT.

Truly I think the best way to get her to give in is through a third party. Like Lucifer just continuing to do his own thing and clearly Helping People and Doing Good Shit would make her apologize. Anyone trying to convince her might be too pushy and make her go in the total opposite direction out of instinct/stubbornness?? Like if she saw him doing good stuff, not to Be Seen Doing It but just because It's What He Does, if that makes any sense

So for what it's worth, Grace has inadvertently pinged Alex's big brother instincts. While she (and no one else) knows it, this means he might not collect on that 'favor'--he just can't do nice things for no reason though.

He'll find her powers fascinating if she ever confides in him. Her goal seems very self-driven and reflective, and his are too. He could definitely encourage her to stand up for herself and own her choices--he's having to own his choices even if the initial one wasn't 'him' per se. She genuinely wants to help though, and while Alex won't admit it, what he needs is someone to actually befriend him so he can learn to trust and open up. Damnit. His journey is going to be all about figuring out his place in the world, and who HE wants to be, given his state of being.

Yeah honestly I'd like to see how a temporary pairing with them would go, because it could honestly go either way, like, very bad influences on each other or very good. COULD BE EITHER and honestly no idea which until it happens so WE SHALL SEE

I'd definitely want a temp pairing before a permanent one though because of that, although I do like their weird little awkward friendship very much

Agreed on all counts. Considering his big brother instinct is one of his good traits, and his 'redemption' is going to be all about figuring out who he wants to be and what he wants to be. (Aka Avoiding having him become a monster=redemption.) I am all for encouraging his good traits.
